Grosse Ile’s “Island All-Stars” soccer team has won the U10 Gold division championship at the Taylor Sportsplex Holiday Shoot-Out tournament in Taylor.  The annual tournament took place on December 26-27.  They bring their first championship trophy home to Grosse Ile.

Led by solid goalkeeping from Matt Frost and Chase Yops, and a stifling defense and midfield anchored by Nick and Max Aston, Luke Yops and Katie Slater, the team allowed just 6 goals in 4 games during the 2-day indoor tournament.  A balanced All-Stars offense featuring goals from Sameer Tayeb, Evan Mazurek of Wyandotte, Zach Rodgers, Lauren Naso and Hunter Polgar, defeated the Dearborn-based MYSA team 7-0 in the championship match.  Previous matches in the tournament included a 2-1 victory over the Dearborn Punishers, a 2-2 tie in an earlier game against MYSA, and a dramatic 4-3 victory over the UFC Eagles, including a last minute goal from Mazurek that clinched a place in Sunday afternoon’s final.

Formed in 2008, The Island All-Stars, a Grosse Ile-based travel soccer team affiliated with the Grosse Ile Soccer Association (GISA) and Metro Soccer Leagues (MSL), is led by trainer and coach Ashlee Morrison.  They play outdoor matches during autumn and spring seasons with MSL.  Home matches are held on Grosse Ile, with away fixtures throughout Metro Detroit.  The team also traveled to Ohio for their first out-of-state tournament this fall.  During the winter months, the team plays indoor matches at the Taylor Sportsplex.

GISA provides Island-based recreational soccer opportunities for boys and girls of all ages during autumn and spring outdoor seasons.  More information on the upcoming spring session is available at www.grosseilesoccer.com.
